YaoJiaShan Village primary school is located in a mountainous area of ShangXi province. It is far away from the city and there is a trail about 10 km long to get to a major road. So people living in the village can not leave when it rains heavily. There are about 1200 people living in this village. Caves serve as their homes. Most adult go out of the village to make living.

Even though people there are very poor, they very much want to have their children to go to school because that is the only way for their kids to leave the mountain to have a better life one day. So they built this school in 2003. The school building is the best construction in the village. Currently there are two teachers and 55 students in the school. Students are allocated from 1st grade 1st to 5^th grade. The teachers’ salary is about 400 Yuan (US$50) per month. The government provides 100 yuan, the rest is from the students’ tuition fees. Very often, the parents of the students can not afford to pay the tuition fees. Two teachers have left the school in the past two years. So there are only two teachers now. All students are divided to two classes. One class includes 2nd, 3rd and 5^th grade students. Another class includes 1st and 4th grade students. The teacher will teach each grade in turn while students in other grades are studying on their own.Tuition fee for a kid to go to school is only 295 Yuan per year, which is under US$40。
